Customizable Hotkeys is LIVE!! Please help us scope version 2

Hi, all y’all:

I’m genuinely delighted to share that, as of Release 147, you can customize Firefox keyboard shortcuts on desktop (MacOS, Windows, and Linux)!

To try it, type about:keyboard in the address bar. From there, you can replace hard-to-type or hard-to-remember shortcuts, eliminate conflicts with other software, and create a set of shortcuts that work best for you. As a member of the disability community and as a Mac user who still can’t completely erase my Windows shortcuts muscle memory (thanks, first OS!), I know from personal experience how powerful even small changes to keyboard shortcuts can be.

We intentionally built this first version as a sturdy-but-limited functional prototype so we could ship it quickly and learn from your real-world use. We’re proud of what we’ve done so far and already planning version 2 for later this year, but we want your feedback to shape what comes next.

Some of you have championed this feature for years (and yes, your astounding 1,600 upvotes helped us to prioritize it. THANK YOU ♥️) Other folks may be trying customizable keyboard shortcuts for the first time, and maybe you’re even wondering if it’s for you. Everyone is welcome to jump into this conversation. Please ask all kinds of questions, share what’s working (or not), and let us know what you think.

A few important notes:

Firefox hotkeys currently work best with English (US) QWERTY keyboards. Support for other keyboard layouts and versions is limited.
Customizable shortcuts are not available yet on Android or iOS.

Some shortcuts, such as new tab (Ctrl+T), new window (Ctrl+N), are reserved, so they cannot be handled/overwritten by websites, while others, such as take shreenshot (Ctrl+Shift+S), are not, so websites can handle them or overwrite them with event.preventDefault().

I think it would be useful to have a toggle for each shortcut to let the user decide if they want that shortcut to be reserved or not.

For example, users of some online editors might want to make Ctrl+T unreserved, so the editor can handle opening new tab itself, or, for example, some other websites may overwrite Ctrl+Shift+S for their functionality, but the user might want that this shortcut always works for taking screenshots.

Will we also be able to customize the keyboard shortcut to open the sidebar (alt+ctrl+z) at some point? On many keyboard settings (us international, but non English language) this shortcut does not work as it produces æ, so does not toggle the sidebar.

Fantastic addition – a very welcome update!

I think an essential feature would be to support Firefox Sync and/or some kind of configuration file similar to user.js, so that shortcuts can easily be shared across installations. I imagine it would have to be platform-specific.

It would be great to have more navigation shortcuts to play with: move to next/previous tab (Ctrl+Tab, Ctrl+Shift+Tab), open sidebar (Ctrl+Alt+z), and go down/up a screen (Space, Shift+Space), are some of the shortcuts I can think of from the top of my head.

yay, it works! was able to turn off the shift+esc shortcut so that i can use discord's "mark all channels as read" function without opening firefox's task manager. thanks so much! stuff like this where you guys listen to feedback is why i'm so glad i switched from chrome 🙂

Would be great to allow sites to bind global system hotkeys (with permissions!). Useful for VoIP applications like Discord to mute microphone or similar stuff without the need to switch back to a specific tab.

Please include support for searching the shortcut keys themselves along with searching the titles of each shortcut. For example, what does Ctrl+Shift+D do? While I can do this using Ctrl+F Find on the about:keyboard page I suspect it would be useful to be able to enter Ctrl+ ... Shift+ ... D in the search box to see what gets filtered to being visible in the list of keyboard shortcuts.

Question: why isn't this listed under Firefox Labs? I thought that section of about:preferences was meant for experimental features?

Request: open sidebar through customizable shortcut.
Bug: When pressing 'SPACE', a blank appears instead of 'SPACE'.

Suggestion: make the interface consistent with about:processes and about:config.

I applaud bringing this functionality to the public. However, the current implementation is deficient in at least two ways and I cannot use it to handle my scenario.

I use Linux at the terminal and I have learned to use ctrl-shift-x/c/v for cut/copy/paste. However, in Firefox, using ctrl-shift-c activates a VERY annoying popup for DOM and Style Inspector (very annoying when it is not my intention to bring up Inspector). This forces me to be constantly switching mental models for cut/copy/paste:

Think: "I'm using a terminal, so use ctrl-shift-x/c/v"
Think: "I'm using Firefox, so use ctrl-x/c/v"

The current keyboard customization interface is deficient:

I cannot map multiple key combinations to the same function (e.g. both ctrl-c and ctrl-shift-c).
There appears to be a bug which prevents me from mapping ctrl-shift-c to Copy and/or ctrl-shift-x to Cut. I can create the mapping, but it doesn't work. However, for some unknown reason, after mapping ctrl-shift-v, I can use *both* ctrl-v and ctrl-shift-v to Paste.

When I saw this in the patch notes, I immediately went to disable whatever hotkey it was that recently got added to Alt+P that started hijacking the input I've used for one of my extensions for years, but it doesn't seem to be exposed in the menu.
At the moment my only gripe is that the list of hotkeys to adjust isn't exhaustive.

The ONE keyboard shortcut I REALLY wanted was `Collapse sidebar (Alt+Ctrl+Z)` which sadly isn't in your first version. 😢 On my Glove 80 (for my RSI) that's a really awkward key combination.
I LOVE the vertical tabs, but sometimes - especially when opening Firefox on a smaller monitor - I really need to hide it. Disappointing that it's not in the first go round, but very excited to see progress towards this feature! 🙂

This is a great start.

I've been dying to change the side mouse button bindings.
The Mouse 4 and Mouse 5 defaults are Page Forward and Page Back.
This is too easy to do by accident, and the result can be really destructive.
I know I can disable them, but I would love to rebind them to something like Next Tab and Previous Tab.
I tried using a rebind extension, but due to extension safety limitations, you have to wait for each page to load, and that was too slow and frustrating.

I would love to be able to do this natively through Firefox in the future.

PLEASE allow us to set a custom keybind for Firefox View with this feature. For at least one of us, this would be tremendously useful.

In general, it would be great if the available actions were exhaustive and without restriction.

I tried to switch my "Reopen Last Closed Tab" shortcut to ctrl+e, but it didn't end up working. It just focused on the url bar and switched my search engine to Google.

it seems to be explicitly listing some things, like Refresh is listed twice as it has two shortcuts, but "open address bar" (don't have English version at hand, I'm sorry) is only listed once while I believe it has 3 hotkeys (listed ctrl+l, unlisted alt+d, unlisted f6)

what I like is that it already lists commands exposed by extensions to let us manage them in a single place

it's quite usable for what it is already but personally I'd consider it an alpha release and aim to have everything listed and ability to add new entries for v1 (that you call v2 I guess)

and once you have properly enumerated the list of all possible commands to expose it like that, what about mouse gestures? still no way to replace FireGestures due to some API limitations

It works too poorly to be usable. Back when add-ons still existed, we'd use VimFX to get immediate hotkeys: "x"-only to close a tab, "t"-only to open a new tab... handily and direct! Current add-ons don't work properly to achieve this anymore — and neither does this new functionality either. It comes with two major issues: it works in text fields, defeating its purpose and becoming unusable (try to type anything with "x" closes the tab), and it disables the original shortcuts, not allowing for multiple shortcuts in place at once, as the original ones are still needed, either because of text fields or a sporadic muscle memory error. Add-ons like Shortkeys don't work properly (having major bugs) as neither did this new feature (which, given how basic it is, should already have been implemented some 25 years ago).

The takeaway: Doesn't allow for multiple shortcuts at once in place and erroneously works in text fields for when setting up a direct letter VimFX setup.

I want to make sure I understand: are you asking for an all-or-nothing share of custom keyboard shortcuts? In other words: shortcuts applied across all your Firefox versions, across all desktop devices, and all your profiles.

Or would you like to pick a subset of your shortcuts to be applied to some of your profiles and/or desktop devices?

If you are interested, you could have a look at Obsidian's Hotkey settings UI. I think their approach is very nice, especially regarding handling conflicts and multiple assignments.

Ok, cool, but why are there so many missing?

In particular, I want to change key_selectTab1 etc, which are ctrl+1/2/3/... on windows and alt+1/2/3/... on linux. ctrl+tab, ctrl+shift+tab are also missing, and "shift+ctrl+tab" is listed as "show all tabs" for some reason.

I have used the new functionality, it is such a great start !

Here are my observation so far

Please allow more actions to be key-bound to

Please allow more than one keyboard keybind for the same action

Please allow mouse or joystick events to be bound to actions, my favorite is binding mousebutton 4/5 to left tab/ right tab

Here is example of more actions

goto last tab,

goto first tab,

goto previous/next tab (this is different from left /right tab), it is related to the tab order and that parents

goto parent tab / go to next child tab (looping inside the parent)

goto next tab group

unhide/hide all tabs hidden tabs

show only X group tab

allow navigation of about:keyboard with the keyboard only

bind delete or backspace to "clear key", enter to "bind key" in about:keyboard

a clear all key bindings button as well as restore all keyboard binding to default buttons (both of these should have a "are you sure" prompt)

a button to save the keybindings to a file

a button to load the keybindings to a file

a keybinding to load keybinding from a file (this allows "keyboard layout" swithing similar to QMK keyboard

In principle this could have been the killer feature… but it doesn’t let one customise "Reopen Last Closed Tab OF THE CURRENT WINDOW"… so one’s still stuck with that crappy regression, where Ctrl+Shift+T (or whatever one chooses) actually opens the last closed windows - which is completely useless as there’s already another shortcut for that.

This is awesome, thanks for your hard work. As others have said changing the Sidebar from Ctrl+Alt+Z would be nice because it conflicts with Nvidia shortcuts. Also, to be able to change tab switching from ctrl+pageup/down to ctrl+left/right arrow. You guys do amazing stuff, thanks again!

There are two entries.
Nouvelle fenêtre privée Ctrl+N

Apparently, that's normal.

Important: When Firefox is set to Always use private browsing mode or to Never remember history, you won't see a purple mask at the top of each window, even though you are in Private Browsing mode

@BelFox, we definitely want to improve the UI, and we want to make it welcoming to all kinds of users -- especially those who don't know anything about keyboard shortcuts and how they can help. LOVE that you submitted a mockup to explain what would be helpful!

As for why this isn't under Firefox Labs: we knew folks really, really wanted this feature (again, nearly 1,600 votes) and we wanted to ship it as fast as possible, to as many people as possible. The mention of "experimental" at the top of the about:keyboard page is more about warning folks that everything they might try to do with the MVP version may not work, or there might even be a few bugs. (btw: thanks for catching that [space] bug!) Finally, we know that a few things people might want to do with customizable shortcuts will never work, and we hope to explain this more fully in v2.

Please retain and improve this 'about:keyboard' feature. As currently implemented, it is a nice, concise and easy way to manage shortcuts. One that is currently missing is Ctrl-Alt-Z, which is the current hotkey for hiding/un-hiding the vertical tabs sidebar.

Tried replacing previous page shortcut with backspace like in good old times but it doesn't work. 😞

Also when manually settings Alt + Left Arrow, it doesn't work either, had to reset it.

Also when manually set, it's written Alt + ARROW_LEFT, while when I reset it's Alt + Flèche gauche (my browser is in french), so maybe the translation issue is making the shortcut to not work?

Tab navigation isn't exposed like Ctrl+PageUp for next tab and Ctrl+Shift+PageUp for moving tabs.

Also add different options for "new tab at the end" that is Ctrl+T and "new tab below/right" with it's own keybinding. This is also achievable if we could set keybinds to bookmarklets.

I added support for customizing the Picture-in-Picture (Ctrl+Shift+]) and Toggle Sidebar (Alt+Ctrl+Z) shortcuts in Nightly. If everything goes right this will arrive in Firefox 149 on March 24.

I'm missing key bindings for some of the tab options that are only available through tab's context menu:

Duplicate tab (the one I actually want to use)
Mute tab
Pin tab
Unload tab

Also key bind for tab search, but TabSearch extension handles that task better anyway.

@Mutsu I'm an Obsidian fan! Some of that app's UX/UI for keyboard shortcuts isn't accessible (e.g., some key info is only available on hover) -- but I'd love to hear what you think of our v2 design when it goes live.

Thank you for your efforts, please focus on a framework that makes it easy to add more action and that allow anything to trigger these actions in a device agnostic way (keyboard,mouse,joystick,externalcommand, api etc..). Once you have that hopefully, whenever someone wants another action keybind, it's just a matter of calling the function with the right context parameter.

As for the keybinding page itself. This is a VERY VERY common but underlooked problem in gaming. I have been keeping notes on common issues which I will now give you. Sorry but my notes are poorly written.

Because the input system is how the user controls firefox, I think it also transmits user expectation to all of firefox, it is not just "input system" it is "will of the user with regards to all of firefox"

I would add to that

I am frustrated when I cannot middle click something to open it in another tab, due to some javascript reasons that I do not accept (whatever it is, never do nothing when i middle click a button, duplicate the tab and click that button if you have to)

Also, text that is not selectable, text must ALWAYS be selectable and copiable

Can you please add the ability to rebind whatever keybind does "open current page in new tab"? I semi-frequently find myself wanting to duplicate the current tab, so I cmd+L to focus the URL bar, then, because of years of muscle memory from Safari, press cmd+return, which just reloads the tab in-place. I instead need to press cmd+shift+return, but I always forget to do that at first. I would absolutely love to be able to swap those two actions. I was really hoping this draft of the feature would allow me to do that, but alas it seems not yet.

But also wanted to explicitly thank you for sharing that this is a challenging key combo for split keyboard users. (The Glove80 was new to me, and I wish I was a traditionally trained "touch typist" -- some of those options are 😍)

First could I suggest a bit of "polish". Unlike about:preferences and about:config, about:keyboard does not open with the search box in focus. I'd prefer it to be here too, as then you can quickly enter a search term.

Some hotkeys I'd like to see are the following. Sorry if some of these have already been mentioned.

* scroll up down, and page up / down
* reload all tabs
* open the side bar at the tabs list (if vertical tabs are enabled)
* independently defined keys for "go left 1 tab", "go right 1 tab", and "go to the previously focused tab"
(so if you switch from tab #33 to tab #15, then one key will take you to #14, another key to #16, and the last key will take you back to #33)

Some further explanation.

Regarding the first item, I am aware that keyboard scrolling can be achieved (depending on certain user options) with space, the arrow keys, page up / down etc., and this is usually fine.

However this will not work if certain controls on a website have keyboard focus. For example, if a volume slider in a video is in focus, then the arrow keys will adjust the volume instead of scrolling. More potentially problematic is that some controls such as buttons may activate if space is pressed while they are focused, which obviously might have unintended effects.

With pure independent scroll up / down and page up / down keys, I could just scroll when I want to without having to think about whether or not a web control is in focus, and what will happen instead of the page scroll if it is.

Regarding the last item. At present you can choose whether ctrl+tab moves to the next tab on the right or the last focused tab via the setting "Ctrl+Tab cycles through tabs in recently used order" in about:preferences. I have this set to off as I generally prefer ctrl+tab to move one tab to the right.

But there are plenty of occasions where I will jump to a non-adjacent tab to check or do something, and then want to jump straight back to the original tab to pick up where I left off.

Hence being able to define independent go left / go right / go to the last focused tab hotkeys would be useful.

This is awesome. Please please please include all alt shortcuts in the future (for example, alt+H, alt+S, etc). Many websites use these shortcuts and it's frustrating to always have the firefox menu come up any time I want to use them.

Earlier I pointed out that at present Firefox offers a choice between two functionalities for ctrl+tab (move to the next tab on the right / move back to the previously focused tab) and suggested that it would be good to be able to just have both functionalities available on different key binds.

In a similar vein, I know that a few users do not like the fact that ctrl+shift+T was changed so that if you press it while Firefox has no closed tabs to reopen, it will instead restore the previous session.

So my next suggestion is
* one key bind that purely reopens closed tabs and does nothing if there are none to reopen (i.e. the old ctrl+shift+T behaviour)
* another key bind that restores the previous session and does nothing if there is no previous session to restore.

Hello, for version 2 please support the "AltGr" key.

I don't know if all layouts have this, but on a UK Qwerty keyboard This is a modifier key often found to the right of the space bar, and is equivalent to pressing Ctrl+Alt.

So rather than pressing the three keys Ctrl+Alt+1 say (which might be awkward for some, especially those without a right alt key), you need only press the two keys AltGr+1.

But currently a Ctrl+Alt+key hotkey will not execute when AltGr+key is pressed.

This would also be useful for the new side bar's Ctrl+Alt+Z hotkey for example, as, again, some might find AltGr+Z easier to press.

Ctrl+J and Ctrl+K both open the url bar with search engine selected. I want to rebind Downloads to Ctrl+J like Windows, but this doesn't work and only opens the url bar instead.

An esoteric shortcut: if the URL bar is selected, ctrl+U will delete from the cursor back to the start of the line (the same way it works in many terminal shells).

It would be really helpful to combine or somehow interconnect this with the manage extension shortcuts window in about:addons. It would be great to be able to edit shortcuts in one place, search for what a shortcut does, and identify conflicting shortcuts.

I am thankful for this feature!

However, I would like to use Google Docs's Move to next tab: (Ctrl + Shift + Pg-Down).

Currently when I try to do that in Firefox, what instead happens is that the current tab is shifted in the list of tabs by one position. A useful feature, but one I'd like to be able to remap, and I don't see it in about:keyboard.

( Potentially relevant context: I use a vertical sidebar for tabs. Also, I need to use the (Fn) key to use (Pg-Down), though I get the same result using (Pg-Down) on an On-Screen Keyboard. )

I really miss a keyboard shortcut for Duplicate Tab, please implement that. (There is previous feature equest from 2022.)

Edge has a built-in shortcut (CTRL+SHIFT+K) for Duplicate Tab, but of course with the new amazing customization options in Firefox, that could be entirely up to the user! 🙂

This is a great start!

Currently it looks like hotkeys you add don't actually _replace_ the existing hotkeys? Also clearing a hotkey also does not seem to work as-expected (it stays active). Even after rebooting, these default hotkeys remain active.

But new ones added do seem to take effect. Is this expected behavior in the current version?

Hello! A quick but sincere thank you for all the additional ideas, kudos, and views for this thread! We are using all this good info to prioritize work in V2 -- and a special thanks to @BelFox for asking about when V2 will land because I have an overall update and a couple requests for all y'all.

We're making slow but steady progress, and customizable hotkeys v2 is (now) dependent on at least two other project teams. Your continued high interest (16.5k+ folks have looked at this discussion thread so far!) and (even more important) upvotes/kudos of this thread will help ensure that we continue get the investment we need to expand the capabilities of this important feature -- as well as to make the UI more welcoming and easy to understand for folks who have never created a custom shortcut and don't yet know that they can. (We've gotten early feedback that these folks find the MVP version "scary" and are afraid they are going to "break something" and most of y'all here are power users. I say that with deep affection ❤️)

Along the same lines of making sure this works for all Firefox user, please also continue to help each other out in this thread with problems and troubleshooting. I won't be nearly as fast to respond, and I know the power and creativity of communal support from my DisCo (disability community) networks. And Firefox itself has a long, proud tradition of communal support.

hey @nvie! Could you please share a bit more about which keyboard shortcuts you're trying to change and what keys you're trying to apply? And perhaps what OS and Firefox version you're on? Your issues seem odd, and we haven't updated about:keyboard since launch. However, there are definitely limits on what's possible in the MVP. For example, we're intentionally not accepting some individual keys or custom shortcut combos because they will break other parts of Firefox.

have you seen Glide Browser? it's an attempt to make keyboard focused browser the right way, being a fork as currently it's impossible otherwise

would it be possible to put some design/architecture in place to simplify such solutions in the future? not necessarily implement everything in the upstream, but make it easier to add missing pieces? I know devs often worked hard to keep compatibility or allow weird features to be injected by various means in third party projects and hacks so I know you have some leeway to put more work to help the community beyond what's the explicit goal of your releases
