Too many update notifications

i had been ignoring the update notification that kept popping up in Firefox for months. but i finally relented and updated,to 143.0.1 mainly to stop the notifications. within days i started getting the notification pop up again.

there are releases at least every two weeks. there is no way to turn the update notifications off. this seems by intention to force people to update.

it's very annoying for those of use who don't live within the browsers world 24/7. it would be nice to at least have the option to turn off notifications completely.

Switch back to the ESR version, which has many fewer updates:

First, set TB updates to 'Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them'. Then

- open your profile folder: TB menu > Help > Troubleshooting Information

- under the Application Basics section next to Profile Folder, click 'Open folder'

- close TB

- install the ESR version from https://www.firefox.com/en-US/download/all/

- close the install dialog - don't start TB from there

- delete the compatiblity.ini file in the already-opened profile folder

- start TB

siffe.....I really wish i could follow your instructions but I cant even understand the acronyms you're using. what is TB? what is ESR?

I managed to get to the troubleshooting information.

i managed to get to Applications Basics.

there is no "open folder" next to that. but it does have a link to "Show in finder". so i guess that is the same time. it takes me to Profiles/jxku89ju.default-release. so then what? why am i going there?

and the link you provide to install whatever the ESR version doesn't show anything that says ESR

this all feels so complicated that i'm bound to make matters worse.

what is the ESR version?

Sorry about saying TB (Thunderbird), should have said FF (Firefox)!

ESR = Extended Support Release

'Show in finder' = 'Open folder'

"why am i going there?": because my last instruction says "delete the compatiblity.ini file in the already-opened profile folder".

"what is the ESR version?": see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/choosing-thunderbird-release-channel#w_thunderbird-extended-support-release-channel-esr.

"the link you provide to install whatever the ESR version doesn't show anything that says ESR": should be a choice in the R. column.

hahaha now that i know what ESR means, i can see that was right in front of me. sorry! (i'm not always an idiot. just sometimes)

i think i understand all this now. but i guess it just feels too convoluted and with my luck i'll go through all that and the pop-up will still keep happening. it just feels like a lot to have to do just to get a #@&$ notification to stop. it pops up like every five minutes. you'd think they could just design it to pop up once a week or something.

but i'll read up more on what the ESR does. and decide later

Agree with all the annoying update prompts- but ironic, that when I am ready to update, I cannot find a menu option to do this????? Please include in the settings menu. Seems like a win-win doesn't it?

The option to Never check for updates was removed from about:preferences. You can use the DisableAppUpdate enterprise policy as a substitute.
