Tired of constantly switching tabs and copy-pasting content to your favorite AI provider? Us too. That’s why, after an initial soft launch, we’re gradually rolling out the AI Chatbot access to everyone. You can find it in Settings > Firefox Labs or right from the sidebar. To begin chatting, you will have to select a provider (e.g. ChatGPT, Gemini, etc.), follow the necessary login instructions, and agree to the selected provider’s terms to start using the chatbot. Firefox does not store your conversation with the 3rd party chatbot (just like if you were using a chatbot on another tab).

Alternatively, if you prefer not to see the entry point, simply deselect the AI Chatbot option in Firefox Labs. For more information, please check out the Support article. Our goal is to bring a range of easy-to-use AI chatbots to users who want to try them. We are also exploring ways for users to bring their own large language models to have an on-device chatbot.

What I love most about having the chatbot in Firefox is the side-by-side interface that cuts down on constant tab switching—it’s all right there when and where I need it in one easy view.

Here are a few of my personal “productivity recipes”:

Summarize long email threads: I selected the text from a long email thread and asked the chatbot to summarize it for a concise overview. I was able to read it faster and “do more with less” on limited screen space.
Polish messages: When writing, I usually start with free flow, focusing on ideas without worrying about grammar, structure, or length. Then, I use my chatbot to refine and polish the draft, making it concise, well-structured, and tailored to a specific tone like professional or friendly. This saves time, ensures high-quality results, and allows for seamless back-and-forth editing side-by-side.
Brainstorm new ideas: While planning my first RV trip, I chatted with my chatbot to get quick tips, suggestions, itineraries, and make modifications - all while I was browsing web pages about RV parks. I love that I can chat without switching tabs or windows, helping me stay focused and maintain context without distractions.

It’s been exciting to see how the community has configured Firefox to use custom providers to make this feature even more valuable such as additional privacy or bleeding edge AI capabilities. Here’s some examples that I’ve gathered from previous discussions:

Llamafile or Ollama + Open WebUI for on-device private chatbots
DuckDuckGo for hosted anonymized chat (thanks for those sharing the &bang trick)
Perplexity for comprehensive answers with citations
Google AI Studio for previews of experimental models
Grok for incorporating realtime discussions
DeepSeek for combining reasoning and grounding

While Firefox might not add these to the default list of providers, we want to continue supporting user choice with a better experience than the current "browser.ml.chat.provider” approach for advanced users. Even though many of these don’t support passing in a prompt from the text selection shortcut, people have found it quite useful to have these chatbots easily accessible without needing to switch tabs.

What chatbots have people found useful that we should consider adding? Any with differentiating features, e.g., agent capabilities, unique data or special prompts?

Why did this need to be enabled by default? Generative AI is garbage, and seeing Mozilla following the hype train is very disappointing.
I thought that the community response when this was introduced in the labs was pretty clear: the top response is a single "NO" with 927 kudos.

Thanks for the response. Hope an actual removal will be planned as soon as possible and i hope this wont be treated like pocket which btw. should also be completely removable. In regards to feedback, i'd only like to note that adding potential controversal features/modules into the browser like this is a bad idea and i'd say an "addon first" approch for something like this would help with negativ user feedback in the future. Hope the team will keep this in mind so that another negative feedback storm can be prevented.

Nearly a thousand people logged on to this website to express discontent with Mozilla's decision to pursue AI, so I find it genuinely disappointing that Mozilla continues to waste time and resources pushing people towards tools that are infamous for engaging in environmental destruction and theft while remaining unprofitable.

That much said: defaults matter. And driving people towards some of the most abusive corporations, OpenAI and Google, appears to speak volumes about Mozilla's ethics. Why OpenAI and not something that needs a tiny fraction of the power for the same result, like DeepSeek? Why not make offline options your top priority, instead of pushing people towards harmful monopolistic corporations?

The link beside the option in the current firefox release still points to the old comment thread, where people have very clearly told you: NO.

I was very disappointed to see that this option was both added to a release version of Firefox, and enabled by default. There is no reason for Firefox to support the use of externally hosted LLM chatbot services, especially those hosted by companies which don't respect the privacy and environmental values that Firefox claims to stand for.

Thanks for sharing, I'm glad I stumbled across this. I'm not a techie, but stumbled into Google AI Studio and Notebook when trying to overcome my introverted nature of self-promotion. I find that my personality type it's a great collaborator and a quicker way to unlock or get access to information I would find by googling or YouTube. It points me in the right direction quicker 🙂

Perhaps you can look at the implementation in the Brave browser, they managed to make it easy to add support for many different LLM endpoints.

Is there a way to change base prompt, some llm are confused with this default one:
```I’m on page “{{page_title}}” with “{{selection}}” selected.```
I want to change it, but it I edit about:config browser.ml.chat.prompts.5 it only adds text after this base prompt.

This happens mainly with claude, it goes: I dunno what you selected, without I cannot explain you anything.

I dont want AI integration in any of my web browsers, I just want it to work without upping my memory to 20% every time i boot this thing up! I am already fighting the windows OS and microsoft to NOT have copilot slow down my usual to-do list. Im already fighting GOOGLE to have them stop snooping through my personal files on google suite, and its already making basic searches worse on duckduckgo. Can just 1 tech company NOT follow the "trend" of wrecking the planet for profit!

So, this whole feature, which you're proud of and which was launched as an "experiment" is just a side-panel that opens a webpage? That's it?

It looks like you took the "search <engine> for ..." in the right-click menu when you highlight something and made it open in a panel instead of a new tab? Is that it, is that the whole feature?

I feel like this would better if it was more general purpose. Like instead of AI garbage, let me open my search engine or even a YouTube video in the side-panel, that seems like a better feature (maybe this already exists in Firefox, I don't use sidebars/side-panels).

I do not want AI integrated into any device I own or integrated into any piece of software which I have installed on any device I own.

There is no reason a browser needs AI integrated into it. Such features should be plugins installed by those who want it, not integrated by default.

It's not just that I don't want to "see" it. I don't want any code which could potentially integrate with any AI system.

I view AI as a very serious privacy risk because I cannot tell what it is doing on the back-end. It involves dragging some third party into my device. But even if I could trust there was no data being collected, AI is going to be used for manipulation. Not just “try to get me to buy stuff”, but also things like psychological manipulation (influencing you to go to certain content or spend too much time on it for example), or even political manipulation. I want absolutely nothing to do with it.

Many FireFox users specifically do not want anything to do with certain companies. I hope there is no integration with systems like "Grok" or "DeepSeek" taking place or any code provided by that company being included into FireFox since I'd have to discontinue using the product immediately. The more integration points to outside services you build into your software, the more likely it is you will have something there I am totally not OK with. I sincerely hope Mozilla will avoid including ANY code into FireFox which would integrate with AI providers people would have security or privacy concerns about and that you will avoid including any code provided by such companies into your code base.

My response is: have you considered just straight up deleting all this? Integrating **bleep**ty AI chatbots is the purview of add-ons. Mozzilla keeps complaining they have a hard time funding their mission: have you considered just making a browser and firing you expensive privacy hating CEO and every person who wants to add ai to a web-browser. There is literally not a single use case, not one. A web-browser allows me to navigate the web, that's it! If I want to integrate a chatbot to spy on me: I can install an extension.

Chrome and Edge are built by two of the biggest corporations in the world, that each have a market cap of over two TRILLION dollars.

If you have a secret plan for Firefox to outrun those behemoths on useful features, please feel free to try that out. But you might want to hold off on gleefully burning the bridges to the existing crowd puller of being the privacy-centric choice, until that actually starts working out for you.

genai-prompt-prefix-selection is grabbing localized string and not configurable since $selection is not a valid thing for about:config. It's also applies Firefox language by default which mostly works bad on everything but English.

To make it more practical in use case, following things are needed in UI:

1. Ability to set up localhost LLM provider. We're still about privacy, right?
2. Ability to customize and edit all prompts, and/or disable built-in ones.
3. Replacement macros/variables for selected text, current page and local time (at least).

Issue I noticed is that when asking it a question it doesn't scroll down automatically as the answer is being fed. This saves the user from having to scroll, especially for long answers. Maybe have an about:config option for that?

Also, I'm the minority: I like AI because it is helping me save time (for the most part), and do things I wouldn't otherwise be able to do. Having it in the browser is a great assist due to the information overload nowadays.
I don't notice any performance issues. I agree though it should be off by-default or prompted after the upgrade.

Disappointing. How is firefox supposed to disrupt the browser monopoly if it just jumps on the AI bandwagon, anonymizing their platform with the same bad technology that chromium is infested with? I'm frankly very irritated, as one of the major characteristics I select my software for is to avoid this mind-melting AI crap. If I needed my browser to read things for me, I'd buy a novel or an audiobook.

In the latest stable build prior to it, you could choose the AI Model in Firefox Labs now when you choose an AI Chatbot you cannot change it to something else afterwards. That is a shame that needs to be placed in the settings.

Another thing to turn off, then to keep making sure it stays turned off, then to keep making sure that something in about:config is not turning it back on again. Or an update pushes it back to the forefront requiring it to be turned off again.

Rinse and repeat.

Librefox is slowly getting installed on my devices. In the vain hope that this might help even just a little to reduce my exposure to data slurping. There are a couple of use cases where I will still use Firefox but then I will only be using them for one website on one device. Behind a Pi-hole with uBlock Origin and Privacy Badger. Without using Firefox Sync.

I remember when learning the language of the country I now live in. In the beginning I could search for the phrase in my new language on the internet. I would be taken to a website with content in that language where I could find the phrase in context to make sure I had understood the phrase and was using the phrase correctly.

Then after a while something changed. Websites started serving up their English pages in other languages, not by employing compentent translators but by using early machine translation. I realised that I could no longer rely on a website in that language actually having been written by a human being who was competent in that language. Unless it was something like a newspaper published in the country I now live in.

AI is just the latest extension of this problem. Meta AI has been shoved into WhatsApp with apparently no way of disabling it. OK, I thought, lets see just how good it is. So I asked the chatbot how I could remove it.

The answers given were a) incorrect and b) irrelevent.

So yes, by all means play with AI but make it an extension that can be removed completely without fuss and nonsense. And while you are at it, remove all references to AI from about:config where they can lurk and be turned on and off by updates at the whims of the mozilla development team. Without anyone noticing.

I'm not happy about this new AI feature, Generative AI has always been a privacy nightmare and are often trained off of material acquired without the creator's approval. If Mozilla wants to keep pursuing Generative AI like this, I'll happily swap my browser over to one that doesn't support wasteful Generative AI.

A company that proudly claims to protect its users' privacy installing data stealing, hallucinating word calculators is a gross breach of trust and has made me seriously reconsider changing browsers. I began using Firefox to avoid these dangerous, grubby decisions. My belief in Mozilla has rapidly began eroding. I may as well just go back to the more feature-complete Google Chrome at this point.

It's amazing how Firefox advertises itself with its "safety" and "privacy" and you're now forcing the "steal all your data constantly" software on all of your users. I've been using it for years to not have a Chromium browser that steals all my data constantly but now I guess I need to find something that isn't owned by Mozilla, too.

Companies need to stop forcing this crap on us. "Just turn it off!" they shout. How about don't force it to be installed in the first place? Maybe I don't want AI scrapping bullcrap on my computer AT ALL. Maybe that's why I don't accept my "free upgrade to Windows 11".

I don't want AI on my system. I don't want it on my browser. I don't care if its "a fun and helpful tool." Get this **bleep** out of my face.

I think most of the people replying to this are being silly. There are all kinds of features in Firefox that you don't use, you're just emotional about this feature because you've ingested a steady diet of dogma, misinformation, and fake activism. I would prefer if Mozilla focuses on local AI and makes that the default user experience, but I understand they're trying to go where people are. I think open models will win for the same reason open software does.

For any fellow anti-capitalists in their feelings as they read my message, ask yourselves what it means that people are able to answer most questions for themselves with software on their own computer instead of sending information to search engines. What about protein folding or fusion? Have you asked any disabled people who use AI what they think? Don't misplace your hate for capitalism, you're shortchanging yourselves and everyone who bends to the toxic stigma you perpetuate. These tools are astonishingly powerful, you just don't realize it because your only experience of them is through the asinine social media posts you write for each other.

Anyway, thanks, Mozilla. Between the local AI integration and vertical tabs, you're getting some good punches in lately.

I've been using Firefox for more than 10 years, specifically for its privacy and reduced ecological footprint. "GenAI" programs go against these two principles. I cannot believe that Firefox force-fed this to its users instead of 1) not falling into the genAI trap at all or at least 2) having an optional AI ad-on, not installed by default, if some users really want it.

This shows a complete lack of understanding of Firefox's user base values and a generally problematic view with respect to what is good for people and for the planet. I'm going to uninstall Firefox and move on to Vivaldi instead, which at least for now is not falling into this wasteful trend.

Because:

- genAI uses stolen data from many sources without acknowledging them. It basically steals the work of writers, artists, musicians, journalists etc.

- It's also requiring a lot of energy for processing and storage, really not the direction we want the world to go to given that we are in an ecological crisis, with climate change on the way, and we should implement solutions to reduce global energy usage, not increase it!

- It's sending the data that you input to the genAI software 'somewhere' under unclear privacy conditions and is probably using that data to feed back into the genAI, so anything that you send it might be shown in some form or other to any other user.

- Lastly, it's basically useless as it doesn't "know" how to make the difference between truthful and accurate information, and garbage. If you already know what you're talking about, you can of course check the AI output, but why use AI in the first place? If you don't know what you're talking about, the AI might feed you something that looks fine from the outside but is wrong in some way that you won't detect.

In summary: it's bad for privacy, bad for the environment, bad for jobs, and probably bad for your brain, and I am really disappointed that Mozilla of all companies fell into that trap.

I just updated to build 137.0 and saw the AI on the new vertical tabs, I want a way to completely remove the AI integration
I couldn't even find a way to disable it from the settings, I had to go to about:config and disable it there!

You can disable it via sidebar -> Settings -> deselect "AI chatbot".

Request to Introduce AI Sidebar in Firefox for Android

I appreciate your recent innovation in integrating an AI sidebar on Firefox desktop. I would like to request that this feature be extended to Firefox for Android as well.

I was surprised there wasn’t a simple toggle in the settings. It would be great to have a clear option to fully disable AI features for those who don’t want them.

I hate AI so so much. Part of the reason I like firefox is because it didn't have a scummy AI chatbot installed. Please stop doing this. Also it should've been easier to remove or disable than it was.

AI is the mediocrity and plagiarism machine. Disgusting.

The sidebar looks cool and useful. Shame there's a big ole useless and wasteful button right at the top and built-in to the browser. Gonna have to start using forks on everything now to get this crap off my systems instead of trusting Firefox to be a safe and reliable solution I can recommend.

this is such a terrible idea. generative ai is deeply unethical due to environmental, labor related, and theft related concerns. it's even been linked to deaths, now. i'm so disappointed with firefox for enabling such toxic systems. i'll look for another browser now.

AI/LLMs are the death of independent thought. Stop pushing this garbage just because everyone else is doing it. Firefox used to be a good alternative, not a trend chasing copycat.

I hate getting updates and having to go and turn all this AI stuff off again. If the features are disabled in my settings, *persist* that setting. It should not be hard to have a simple heuristic for this - "does this user have 100% of all existing AI settings off? OK, don't turn on another new one". Getting closer to just switching to a fork to get rid of this.

I hate this feature and have done everything I can to root it out of my computer. I'm not "tired of switching tabs." I've never used AI, have no desire to EVER use AI, and in fact openly speak out about its detrimental qualities as an academic on a regular basis. This integration has singlehandedly destroyed my trust in Mozilla and has inspired me to look for new privacy-focused browsers, because I sure as hell can't trust Firefox any longer.

Complete garbage @Jolie. No one asked for this, nor needs it, and the self-congratulatory blog posts are not a good look. I gave Firefox another go because of the Leo slop that is all over Brave, just to find Mozilla has done the exact same. Sad.

Exactly. We need to simplify, lower security risks and reduce browser overheard, not add to it. Browsers are way too bloated now. I guess Mozilla realised they can't compete with Google's Chrome without adding "AI" features.
