Firefox would not Update with Restart

Firefox showed a message that it needed to restart to update. It did not update at restart, and the message was still there. I attempted restarts several time, including restarting my PC.

At the same time, I could not log in to Firefox to provide this message. (I had another application that would not work, but do not know if the two problems are related.)

Finally, I started the Troubleshoot Mode, got logged in, and the restart message went away, I assume Firefox updated. And now, I am able to type this message.

What has been the problem?

I am now getting the message to restart to update the browser. I restart the browser and the message is still there. I assume this is just a new feature.

Having similar issues recently with the past few updates for FF/Win 10.

I download the update (eg, 137.0, today) and then click "Restart to update Firefox". Firefox just returns to the open page and the update isn't installed, no matter how many times I go to Help>About>"Restart...". Exact same thing happens on both my Win 10 desktop and Win 10 laptop now.

The only way to get the update installed is to click the Windows X to close FF and then manually launch it again via desktop shortcut. Now the update progress bar appears and then FF opens with the update installed.

In the past, just clicking "Restart to update..." would close FF, install the update and then automatically launch FF again and re-open the page that was open when I clicked "Restart...".

is this an intentional change..?

Yes. I had a similar problem with other software that ccleaner says has an update, but the software says I'm current. I just download the software and it works fine.

As far as i'm concerned my update software App is voluntarily deactivated, that's my strategy.

Update Firefox to the latest release https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/update-firefox-latest-release, that's my strategy.

I don't use ccleaner either, but the "Restart to update Firefox" button is clearly broken. Good to know I'm not the only one with this problem, and it's not an issue on my PC.

Guess we'll all have to wait until they figure this out and include the fix in some future FF update...

I've noticed with 137.02 app.update.multiSessionInstallLockout.enabled is false by default.

I updated to 137.0.2 the other day and had the same problem again. I had to close FF completely by clicking the Win 10 X. When I launched FF again the update got installed before FF opened.

App.update.multiSessionInstallLockout.enabled is still true after the 137.0.2 update for Win 10 here.
