topic solution to avoid beinf flooded with thousands of "old" emails when the thunderbird has a brakedown in Discussions

I have used Thunderbird since many years and was very happy. During 2025 two times Thunderbird did (again) download older mails so I was flooded with old emails which I had already read or already deleted. This did never occure in the past!! It did take me many hours to delete all these emails. Do you have a solution to avoid such automatic downloads of the old mails or can Thunderbird at least signal these emails so the deletion can be done in a less time consuming fashion? Or what can I do to stop such automatic downloads of older emails? Best regards Rolf
