Am currently using Thunderbird on v115.3.1. For a couple of versions at least, attempting to zoom the text of an incoming mail using Ctrl/+ does nothing until I zoom once using the View menu, then Ctrl/+ works for subsequent zooms.

Edit: I have found that the Ctrl/+ will start working just by opening and closing the View menu without even selecting Zoom from there.

Ctrl+scroll works and after doing that, the keyboard shortcut starts working also.

A real hassle. I have many e-mails that I cant read unless I blow them up, which means I have to press many keys to do it like CTRL-V-Z then Enter, then CTRL-+ repeatedly for the right zoom. The next email defaults back to the original zoom to have to do all over again. It's bad when you've got 50 emails to open.

I'm on Fedora Linux 39 using Thunderbird 115.6.0 as a Flatpak and this issue is still present. The fix of just clicking on the View menu and then doing Ctrl/+ works, but what is working for sure is holding Ctrl while moving the mouse wheel up/down for zooming, so this is an alternate shortcut you could use. I'm on a touchpad so this is a little less convenient but still works.

I may stick around and see if it is ever going to be fixed now that your workaround functions.

On my Windows 11 partition with the same version of Thunderbird Ctrl/+ also does not work, and you still need to hold Ctrl while scrolling. This is probably just a Thunderbird issue and not OS-related.

I am aware of the work-arounds like the two handed (C+scroll the mouse) and the (double click the view tab) required for each and every message you want to view. But so far only these crippled work-arounds exist. All are a pita and not a solution to the single hand C++ function.

I would like to suggest an improvement that would obviate the need of completely fixing this keyboard shortcut: add a zoom bar to the reader pane, on the lower right (like Vivaldi browser has...) That can be more convenient than using a keyboard shortcut...

There is similar available for Firefox, so it shouldn't be difficult to make available for TB. Moreover there used to be such an add-on for previous versions. However, I prefer the keyboard shortcut we had in the good old version before the major, awful, redesign. As several have said, this is incredibly irritating as EVERY message has to be resized with the click view menu and then use keypad routine.

I find that most often I open an Email with my mouse; so jumping to a slide bar to zoom the message takes less effort than the shifting gears of using a keyboard shortcut after a mouse gesture (which is why those browsers implemented that...)

Though the keyboard shortcuts should also be eventually fixed to provide support for non-pointing client interfaces (either because they are using a primitive software interface, or because the user is handicapped...) I was just suggesting a fix with the slider that would be relatively easy to implement, and thus a subset of users immediately stop complaining...

At last, I found a solution that works for me. Why it's buried, I don't know. I recently upgraded to a 16.5in screen for my eyesight so it's been really important to sort this. I've set to a font size of 28 (it's pixels not points). https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1430928

Well...I'm on a rugged laptop (for reasons of safety...), and the largest size it comes in is 14". I also have a rugged tablet that I am experimenting with as a KDE/plasma comms device, an alternative to ghastly Android/iOS devices; it has a 9" diagonal. I often need to zoom on it.

A zoom mouse pointer? I find it confusing and inorganic...

Thank you for this suggestion. I am still struggling to get my head around it fully (I am in my 80s, so not as bright as I once was!!), but I think it may be providing some improvement.

Well I loaded up 128.3.3esr (64-bit) and the claim that it is fixed is BOGUS on a Ubuntu Linux machine.

Strange that someone found a particular version of (one) operating system where they patched it and marked this problem as fixed when clearly the Thunderbird Community keeps telling them ... IT IS NOT.

It' is time to revisit the problem... Worked great in 102 and earlier versions until the 115 upgrade messed it up.

I believe this is mixing issues Composition settings and the ability to Zoom are 2 different problems.

I do like the suggestion Steve_b made of adding a zoom bar to the reader pane. Would end up giving the best of both ways to Zoom. That is if they ever admit the Keyboard Zoom is NOT fixed in 128 and reopen the ticket to fix it..

Albert, Have you ever found a solution yet? Its been 2 years and we have now progressed to Version 140.1.1esr (64-bit) and the keyboard zoom function is still broken. Having to run in the Preview Mode where it opens every (SPAM, FISHING) email is not an option here.
Seems they want that Preview mode or having to uses some kludge of a work-around to be deemed a FIX (when clearly it is not)
