The main problem is that website authors can specify whether the browser should open an individual link in place or in a new window/tab. Firefox doesn't have a feature to open ALL web page links in a new window/tab, only the one that switches between new window and new tab.

For me, the links on the Firefox home / new tab page always open in the same tab. I wonder whether we have a different setting somewhere?

Please either:

A) click on a link, open a new tab, or

B) click on a link, advance to that link in the current window

It's inconsistent and counter intuitive that links advance the current window UNLESS they are your home/frequented links on your start page (ie literally your most used links), then they always open a new window.
