Thunderbird 115 does not know how to open an attachment

Thunderbird can open jpg or png attachments. But it does not know how to open other formats, such as .docx.

The app does offer to "open" it, but then nothing happens.

Settings > General does not offer this .docs in "Files & Attachments".

But I have no choice to add a proper document format here or to use an "Open With..." as a command here.

Try

Go to your profile
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_how-do-i-find-my-profile Open Folder

Then, shut down Thunderbird
Then, in your profile, delete the file handlers.json or rename the file (for example) handlers.json-old
Next, start Thunderbird
Next, go to Settings -> General -> Files and attachments and see what happens: the actions will be reset to new.
Next, perform your checks

handlers.json will be automatically recreated
You can view the contents of the file, handlers.json, for example with Notepad
