Firefox Sidebar and Vertical tabs: try them out in Nightly Firefox Labs 131

Hi folks,

Vertical tabs and a new sidebar experience that make multitasking and context-switching easier are now available in Nightly 131. To try them, update to the latest Nightly and go to Settings > Firefox Labs, and activate the Sidebar and Vertical tabs experiments.

After you do this, you will be able to see the new sidebar, but you will still need to add the sidebar icon to the toolbar to be able to expand vertical tabs. Click Customize toolbar in the toolbar right-click menu, and drag the sidebar icon to your toolbar. This is a temporary situation, and in the future the icon will be added to the toolbar automatically.

A few things to keep in mind:

This work is still very much in progress and has some rough edges, functionally and visually. You’ll see us improve and polish things over the coming months.
We will be sharing our informal backlog of improvements in this post today, so you can get a sense for where we ultimately want these features to be.
To design this first version, we conducted extensive research, talked to many Firefox users to understand their multitasking and context-switching needs, and prototyped extensively to find the best solutions to address them.

What we’re putting out there is something that we believe will help the majority of people using Firefox achieve their day-to-day tasks. We know there is no perfect solution for everyone and welcome your feedback to shape the direction we move forward in.

It's finally here, nice.

It's a great start still needs a bit of work.

Issues:

Unable to remove tab search button when using sidebar and vertical tabs.
Wasted space with windows controls not being forced into a single line with url bar etc.

Nice to haves:

Panel width sizing control would be a big plus
Ability to move new tab button below tabs in sidebar.
Bookmark favicons front and center at the top of the side bar (Arc like) for easier access.

A bunch of that can be do using css, but normal users won't even consider that approach.

Overall nice job.

1. We will land the patch that forces existing navigation bar and its contents into the toolbar, reducing the empty space in the nearest future, please bear with us in the meantime🙏

2. Sidebar width size control (the History, Tabs from other devices and other panels are already resizable) is a high priority on our backlog, but we likely won't get to it quickly.

3. Can you please tell me more about the bookmarks use case? Do you mean you would prefer to be able to add bookmarks to the top of the sidebar/pinned tab areas instead of where they currently are at the bottom of the sidebar? Please note that bookmarks are not one of the default tools, so you'd need to add them via the Customize sidebar menu.

Thanks for this, looking forward to future development! I'd say the most pressing issue is the wasted space on the toolbar. Also, it would be nice to have a close button for the tabs, although getting the sizing right might be difficult.

Other than that the only issue I see is that favicon alignment seems off (see attached).

You can now enable it in a more user-friendly way:

1. Go to Firefox Settings > Firefox Labs (or just type about:preferences#experimental in your awesome bar and hit enter).

2. Put checks in the checkboxes of Vertical tabs and Sidebar experiments.

3. You should be able to see both after that.

Oh, yes I meant on the collapsed sidebar, but it's not that big of a deal. Actually I think it's more of a me problem, since my middle mouse button is not working, the only options left are to either right click > close tab, or ctrl+w which I'm not used to. Might be a good time to start using that, or to get a new mouse 😅.

Thanks to the Firefox dev team for working on, some ideas about these:

1. The icons for Tabs from other devices and History in the new sidebar are smaller than the icons for Bookmarks and Customize sidebar, which doesn't look very coordinated.

2. The search box in the sidebar panel does not match the style of other search boxes in the Firefox UI design, maybe it would be better to change it to a rounded rectangle like the other elements?

3. Vertical tabs can be designed to expand and collapse automatically - just like Microsoft Edge, vertical tabs expand automatically when the mouse is moved into the vertical tabs, and collapse automatically when the mouse is moved out, and then provide a setting: Maximize, Minimum, and Auto-Expanding (there may be a better design).

4. When the mouse is placed on the vertical tab, the popup tab preview should be displayed on the left or right side of the vertical tab.

For example, when the sidebar and vertical tabs are fixed on the left side, the tab preview should be shown on the right side instead of below; if the sidebar and vertical tabs are fixed on the right side, the tab preview should be shown on the left side.

Anyway, thanks to the Firefox devs for making native vertical tabs a reality, good job!

Integration of sidebar is pretty handy thanks for adding team mozilla!

Although there is one issue that i found - even if you keep the sidebar position to right it still goes to left somehow after i reopen my nightly browser and then if i click on nightly settings in sidebar it fixes itself to right again.

Is there any way to collapse the sidebar into only favicons? I tried going through every page in Nightly settings but couldn't find anything, and since this was a fairly recent feature Google didn't return any relevant result other than this thread so figured this is where I'd ask.

The sidebar icon is too small and incongruous. And after I chose to hide the sidebar, it didn't hide. My idea is that when I choose to hide the sidebar, the sidebar disappears, and when I mouse over the left sidebar area, the sidebar shows up again, which is my idea for hiding the sidebar. And there seems to be a bug when I choose to hide the sidebar, the sidebar becomes what it looks like in the image below. You can only revert to the original state by closing and reopening the sidebar in Firefox Experiments

I want the vertical tabs feature to be turned on, and the tabs will only show one icon, and when I move the mouse to the sidebar, the tabs will be fully expanded, just like the Floorp browser. This saves as much space as possible, and I want to save space by moving the zoom out, maximum, and close buttons down to the address bar

I just have two request:

I want to slide the last button of List all tabs button to the modules tabs. The icon is grey, so I can not slide it and take to many space. So I can apply in about:config

After a bit of stuggling, I found out that clicking the sidebar button in the top toolbar toggles the sidebar state (collapsed or expanded). If you don't have the button in the toolbar, you can add it from the "customize toolbar" in the right click menu.

Is it possible to allow simultaneous use of horizontal and vertical tabs?
Vertical Tabs + Horizontal Tabs?

Will tab grouping be available for vertical tabs, and when will tab grouping be available in the Nearly version?

Have you considered the auto-hide and auto-open sidebar feature?

When opening a story in the sidebar, how can I automatically focus the search, as it is implemented in the sidebar tabs?

Also, the button to close the tab should be displayed when you hover over the tab, even when it is of a narrow size where only icons are visible.

I hope that somewhere in the future it will be possible to implement 2 sidebars, either one next to the other, or one on the left and the other on the right.

it seems the sidebar and customize sidebar page are separate. if you close the setting page, you'll notice the sidebar is hidden, unless it is always shown

Thanks so much for working on this, it's a great start! I've been hoping for vertical tabs for years. 🙂

Here are some issues I've noticed:

When I have dozens of tabs open, tab-preview-on-hover seems to be making sidebar scrolling painfully slow. Scrolling pauses momentarily on each tab to show its title and/or thumbnail.
The tabs are very tall relative to their content; it would be nice to be able to increase the density. (Issue #1 above makes this more important to me -- extra padding requires more scrolling.)
+1 to the request for an option to make the sidebar auto-hide/auto-expand when the mouse hovers.

Finally vertical tabs! Great start, although definitely a lot more needs to be addressed. I will preface this by saying a lot of this feedback is comparing this to Arc browser, which imho has the best implementation of this feature by far.

As general feedback, the main points are:

1. Bookmarking needs to be updated/reworked for vertical tabs. A system like Arc, like @blu already suggested, would be ideal. Pinned tabs already works similarly to the pinned favicons in Arc, except it's tied to that specific window and disappears if the window is closed. I would suggest something like 'Sticky tabs' or 'Favourite tabs', so you can permanently keep tabs at the top of the sidebar (basically exactly how Arc works, it's fantastic).

2. Tree-style tabs - the existing extension is great and all, but having this functionality natively would be ideal. The current UI seems like it would easily work with that.

3. Favicons need to be bigger, or at least there should be an option to customize their size, right now they are too small when viewed on a high-res, large monitor.

4. Firefox already does containers and whatnot, but having different 'shelves' for sets of tabs would be amazing. Once again, basically 'Spaces' as currently used in Arc browser. Maybe work Containers into the sidebar, so you can have a list of your containers at the bottom that you can 'swipe' between.

5. Allow us to change the display of these from a row-by-row links + icon, to just one row of icons with no text and a hover tooltip (again, like Arc). Right now this is a lot of space wasted on text most people will recognise the icons for:

Im very happy with this change and think it looks really nice, specially with the default skin on linux. Very clean and elegant. It has some bugs still but its nightly, so it will get sorted out.

Just another opinion on tree tabs, which I disagree being made native:

2. Tree tabs aren't strictly necessary, one could just organize things ( tabs and their possible combination sets ) with features like Arc's folders ( for tab grouping of tabs into meaningful tasks ) and spaces ( for tasks of a particular kind/nature/theme ). Which are similar features to that of Vivaldi with its collapsible stacks and workspaces. Its stacks can group links opened from a parent page or its children into the same tab stack automatically and/or manually with its stack tabs by host or by selection, for example, if those options are enabled in Vivaldi's settings.

Disclaimer: I'm not a nightly build user, so I haven't a full view of what's being referred to, particularly images of still in development features.

I figured out how to do that via the "show sidebars" button, but if there's a keyboard shortcut I don't know about it

The new history sidebar is worse in nearly every way compared to the old one.

Issues:

Doing Control-h and typing a query no longer works
Only one type of sorting/grouping is available
Opening history forces an interaction instead of showing the latest visited pages
The input box looks like no other input box anywhere in Firefox
Worse information density
Hover colors seem darker than previous version

A couple of things:

1. One is obviously tabs nesting, and able to resize the sidebar.

2. The blue line marker to know the current active tab is not all intuitive. The highlight can be on the whole tab.

3. The tooltip and tab-preview are one the sidebar which is can be on the right side of the sidebar.

Thank you so much for this feature, its fantastic and I really like the innovative idea to link extensions and chatbots into the tab bar, great stuff!!

One feature I notice I miss moving from a javascript/css extension Tab Center Reborn is the ability to widen the tab bar temporarily on hover. This helps me keep track of the tabs with text like I usually can on horizontal tabs. I have (hopefully) attached a video.

1. It would be nice if a new private window did not default to having the sidebar tabs collapsed. When I open a private window, I expect the sidebar tabs to be expanded if my regular browser window has them expanded.

It is possible to move to tabs that are not visible in the tab strip using the keyboard - unlike the horizontal implementation, the "tabs" remain offscreen.

In the screencast above, I have moved from tabs visible on the strip to those that are not, and back to tabs that are visible.

Hi there, great to see this out in the wild! Long-time user of tree-style tabs (and Firefox) that's been looking forward to a native implementation. For context, I tend to have 10-50 tabs open in each window, often leaning on the windows themselves for master grouping.

I'm not a TST / vertical tabs power user, but the two main features I rely on day-to-day are:

Tab grouping / hierarchy: clicking a link in one tab (optionally) opens it as a child tab; tabs can be dragged / grouped under parent tabs (I guess this is in the name!); groups can be re-ordered
Unloading tabs: I think this may be enabled by extension, but having the ability to selectively unload a group of tabs is great for manual memory management

In addition to those built-in features, I've also built a very simple TST hack / extension that - IMO - provides a bit more of a holistic approach to tab organisation. Instead of using vertical OR horizontal tabs, it uses both: reserving the horizontal tab space as a "workspace" for recently active and pinned tabs and then including the full laundry list in the sidebar. It's not perfect, but combined with tab grouping and unloading I've found it to be a pretty solid / flexible approach to prioritising your current area of browsing focus. I've been using it as a daily driver for a number of years. In brief:

Pinned tabs: appear in the horizontal tab space, per the browser default
Active tab: the currently focused tab (if not pinned) appears wide in the horizontal tab space ... page titles are easily read at a glance without opening the vertical tab sidebar. The active tab remains in the horizontal space indefinitely.
Recently active tabs: tabs that have recently been in focus appear narrow in the horizontal tab space. After a set time they disappear (mine is set to 3 minutes). This allows you to flick between recent tabs without losing track.
Pinned active tab: stays pinned, except the most recently active non-pinned tab stays visible in the horizontal tab space for an extended period (mine is set to 1hr)
All tabs, except pinned: appear in the vertical tab space. This is where you organise, search, unload, etc.

To be clear, this is just one angle at solving a general tab organisation challenge. I'd be equally interested in an alternative approach that tackles the same. See below for an old screen grab:

Some additional features I'd love to see:

Tab search: appreciate this is already available via the URL bar, but having a search / filter for the current window in the vertical tabs sidebar would be next level
Bookmarks toolbar to right / left of sidebar: when the bookmarks horizontal toolbar is set to show only on new tabs it causes the tabs sidebar to drop down every time you open a new tab. UI shift is generally bad. Be great to see sidebar stay aligned to top and the bookmarks toolbar only take up the available width where this is the case.
Sidebar expand on hover: this is included in my hack, but it's barebones and one of the more annoying aspects (I often accidentally open the sidebar, which can be sluggish). Would be great to see a performant native version that uses more smarts to work out when to open.

Hi, When use vertical sidebar. I notice the width is narrow with some tools. We have drag to adjust the width. It would be nice to have assignable shortcuts for increasing/decreasing sidebar width as it will be faster anytime

Thank you for landing this long-awaited feature!

For me the main reason for wanting the vertical side-bar is because of the stupid aspect ratio of most modern displays, wasting a lot of horizontal space.

So horizontal space I have, and I don't need the vertical bar to be this compact, and having a list of icons for me is just not usable, I can find my tabs, I need to be able to see the labels/page titles. So for now I think I won't be using it, but when that's solved, I'll be all over it!

Great start! A few notes specifically about using this on a touch device:

This works well for touch, enables fullscreen tabbing as a replacement for not being able to use fullscreen with always-on tabs at the top. It's also much easier to navigate tabs while on a Surface Pro device now.
However, I'm struggling to use hold-to-right-click on the small tab strip. This is ultimately a Windows issue, but it'd be useful to have some way to reliably and quickly close tabs without having to right click or have the wide tab ribbon deployed, the way you can with pinned tabs on the horizontal ribbon.
I was confused about the "always on" versus "hide" option. UX-wise I was expecting auto-hide, kinda like the Windows taskbar, and it took me a while to figure out the option referred to what happens when the sidebar button is set to off. This needs some UX polish, I think.
In general, an easier way to expand/hide the bar in fullscreen would be good. I'm not sure if there's a keyboard shortcut for this, but that may be the answer, now that the tabs can live here.
No tab name display pop-up on hover at the moment. I'm assuming that will come in at some point.
No dynamic width by dragging the tab edge on the wide vertical tab display at the moment. Also hoping that gets added.
Horizontal display for pinned tabs in the wide sidebar is a familiar design from some of the plugins previously available, but that seems like something I'd like to be able to toggle on/off at some point.

When vertical tabs are in use, the titlebar is largely empty, containing only three redundant tab navigation buttons.

It would be preferable if the titlebar could be hidden entirely in this mode, saving some vertical space.

I mainly have three issues with the new sidebar (testing on 129 instead of nightly, sorry, lmk if any of this has been adressedalready)

After switching to the sidebar, the + button that used to be below the tabs was there. After removing it from the top bar (and then removing the bar itself via userChrome.css), the + is gone in the sidebar. It doesn't come back if I add the + back.
It is currently not possible to open new tabs with a double click / middle click on an empty part of the sidebar.
It would be nice to be able to reorder the items in the lower part of the sidebar, e.g. putting bitwarden on top of the other elements.

The toolbar "Show sidebars" button now seems to work on the vertical tab strip instead of the sidebar like it used to previously. You can see this easily by installing Open in Sidebar, opening something in the sidebar, then clicking the "Show sidebars" button in the toolbar with the new sidebar enabled.

In release, the button shows and hides the extension sidebar. In Nightly, it acts on the tab strip.

This seems broken to me.

I think the vertical tabs look great, I was using the Tree Style Tabs extension previously, and I miss the following features:

- Being able to nest tabs and collapse them from a common parent tab

- Having a hotkey / shortcut to collapse or expand the whole sidebar (the same behavior that you get when pressing the "Show sidebar" button). I don't think this currently exists, or if it does I don't know where to find it.

Great job by the way! I was waiting for this for a long time.

I've just tried this one out and it looks promising. Most things work great. Personally I care about more minimal, compact UI, though. One thing which I do miss right now is that, when I set tabs as vertical ones,

I cannot move "List all tabs" button anywhere.

"List all tabs" is the only button which stops me from removing the top-most bar. I would love to see only one bar - with the address field plus some icons.

This is nice but it still has a few bugs to iron out. One feature I would like to see is tab labels to the left/right of the vertical tabs as icons sometimes are not enough to distinguish at a glance what the tab is.
Also on a default toolbar with no customizations, the "Open a new tab (Ctrl+T)" button and "View recent browsing across windows" button stays on the horizontal tab list when you turn on vertical tabs, which makes the horizontal tab list look empty, it would be nice if they were moved to the vertical tab bar.

But still, this is a great start!

Hi, it'd be nice if the Vertical tabs are kept seperate from the sidebar, similar to how its done in MSEdge.

Heres a similar implementation in firefox with sideberry and the bookmarks bar moved to the right to create a makeshift sidebar using custom CSS.

Albeit the feature is great, switching tabs using ⌘ + ⌥ + <left-arrow> and ⌘ + ⌥ + <right-arrow> in vertical mode does not feel logical to me. It would be great if it could be swapped to use <up-arrow> and <down-arrow> instead.

Initial feedback:

Please add ability to drag and adjust width of sidebar.
Please add ability to have pinned tabs as favicons like with the addon, Tab Center Redux. I have quite a few pinned tabs and they take up a lot of space if not collapsed to favicons.
>>Edit: I just updated to the latest beta and see that this has been done. Awesome! Looks nice! Ability to adjust the padding might be useful to condense the space taken up by pins further, but it's great, other than that.
Please add the ability to search tabs like with the addon, Tab Center Redux.
The scrollbar for the sidebar and tabs could stand to be a bit wider for the purposed of clicking and dragging the scrollbar indicator. It's a bit thin.

Two minor UI suggestions re. vertical tabs bar:
- I'd like to see the "new tab" icon on the bottom of all current open tabs. This way I won't have a "gap" between my current open tabs, and my current pinned tabs.

- I'd also like to see a minor "x" to close a tab when I hover my mouse pointer on it, so I can close it quickly when I no longer need it (and make it more accessible to those who don't have a middle mouse button / not tech savvy persons).

One major nice to have would be to squeeze the whole adressbar into the title bar, i.e. same top-row that has minimize, maximize and close buttons. I understand that it would be a headache though, considering each desktop would require a different implementation for it.

This is a useful feature which I have been hoping to see in Firefox. I would suggest making the sidebar resizeable when it opens up, so you can see the entire label of each sidebar tab.

To give you some insight into my use case and why that would be useful to people like me:

I often have a large number of tabs to remote desktop sessions open for my job, where the title of each tab starts with a (relatively long) username, followed by the server name, which is the part of the title I would like to see. Of course, the tabs can only be so long in horizontal tabs, so the server names are not visible in the tab labels without hovering over them. Vertical tabs more or less solve this problem for me by allowing more of the tab label to be shown, and so revealing the full name of the server and allowing me to quickly jump between them without hovering on each tab to check which RDP connection each tab leads to.

However, despite the fact that these new vertical tabs now show more of the server names, some of it is still cut off -- and I can't seem to resize the sidebar to an appropriate length to show the whole length of the tab labels.

I am very happy that this feature has been added, in any case!

Hide the sidebar in fullscreen (F11). To show the sidebar again we can do this via cursor. Same as the top bar.
The abillity to resize the toolbar would be nice

Great update! I have a few suggestions to enhance the experience:

Automatically hide vertical tabs when extensions like Sideberry are enabled.
Center the plus sign more precisely, aligning it with the tabs for a cleaner look.
Add the option to create custom web panels—essentially mobile versions of websites attached to the sidebar.
Address the issue where large prompts make the ChatGPT page appear empty.
Allow users to edit the vertical panel directly in the UI editor (where the dragon pic is located).

I really appreciate the direction you're taking with this feature. I’d even support adding more telemetry to help you explore different usage scenarios.

This is a great start but a lot of things could be improved.

Allow us to choose the position of the New Tab (+) button. I'd prefer it after all the tabs instead of at the top. Add a visible dividing line between the last tab and the button.
Reduce the gab between tabs.
Add a visible purple border to the right of each tab in incognito, to make it immediately recognized.
If bookmarks are shown only on new tabs, when scrolling through multiple open tabs, and among them a New Tab page (about:newtab), all the tabs shift down to make place for the bookmarks bar. When selecting the new tab, the mouse is no longer on the new tab, but on the tab above it, so I have to move the mouse two tabs down to move to the next tab (after newtab), then one tab up to move to the next tab.
If the sidebar is collapsed, it stays collapsed on hover, so there's no intuitive way to close a tab. The sidebar should expand on hover (preferably after a small delay - .25 s, make it modifiable), allowing us to close a tab via X when hovering over it, and collapse when the mouse moves away.

One more thing I realized - the sidebar currently shifts the page when expanded. If an expand-over-hover feature is added, then this behavior would likely need to be changed to float so it's not constantly changing the page layout when the user browses their tabs.

I think grouping history can be a useful UI decision to aid navigation, but having to click twice to see my history (first to open the history panel, second to open one of the groups) feels like a silly step back regarding ease of use.

At the very least, please consider remembering which group I last opened and keep it open. I don't think that's the ideal solution, but it would make using the panel a bit less frustrating.

It's rough right now, but I'm interested in seeing what this new sidebar will look like in the future.

I've been trying it out and I've been having a great time with it. My only thing is wishing to be able to have an option where we can expand the tabs from hovering on the left side of the screen instead of clicking the 'show sidebars' button. It would also really help when we have a lot of tabs open and scrolling through when doing massive amounts of research. Otherwise, really great work so far.

Looks like I'm a bit early as the version of Nightly I installed on my machine doesn't have the sidebar tabs functionality yet (130.xyz, not 131) but I'll happily wait a few weeks hoping it lands soon. It's not currently easy to see which tab is playing audio. The website's favicon is displayed by default, and only after you hover over the tab's icon does it turn into a speaker revealing you can mute the tab.

First of all thanks for the feature. I'm still however looking for full Tree Style replacement of an addon from Chrome: Tabs Outliner and the closest one is Tree Style Tabs in Firefox, but it incomplete and laggy with a lot of tabs. One of the reasons I wanted to remove tabs from the top is because I'm using TST addon.

There are few things that bothering me right now, they can be added as options to enable/disable.

+ button for creating new tab in top nav bar, we already have one in side bar. I hide it (in CSS posted below)
Empty top nav bar that can easily be integrated with search bar and addons (again CSS below)
There is no way to hide custom side bars from addons, if there are a lot of them they take a lot of space. I want to have three dots button that collapse all this addon tabs (example addons that add buttons: TST, Bitwarden, etc.)
There a few modes that sidebar can be viewed: hidden, compact, full. However I want to have a bit special case, at least for tabs. I want tabs sidebar stays always in compact mode (so that it wont affect content on page), but when I hovering over it, it will expand to full size and wont change actual page content (like it is overlayed over web page, or position: absolute/fixed; with higher z-index). I also provide CSS for that below.
Option for scrolling on the selected tab in vertical list. There is legit cases where this may not be wanted, so keeping current behaviour as an option is good too.

Now, my CSS for general UI (userChrome.css). ~~Take a note that I currently also use addon Tab Counter, that's why I have this hack with extra space for button at right.~~ (Removed, but I keep --custom-buuttons-width if anyone needed that) Also this CSS is for Windows 10 buttons, so it may not work well on Linux/Mac.

For a sidebar, I would like to see an ability to add custom links there, like in Vivaldi and a customization like for the top bar.
For vertical tabs:
- custom size (drag to resize)
- custom amount of pinned tabs in a row
- tree view might be too much to ask

Totally agree with the idea to moving the window controls to the same space as the address bar (and delete the extra space at the top that was occupied by the horizontal tabs bar). I had created a userChrome.css file previously to do that, using with it the Tree Style Tabs extension.

But glad to see this vertical tabs feature coming really soon and that the team have planned to move the window controls to the toolbar. I test the vertical tabs right now in the latest v130 beta by changing two values in the about:config. Looks already well !

I want to thank you all who tried this first version so very much for your willingness to poke at it and for your kind and generous feedback. It means a lot for the team, as we are committed to improving this work over time, and it's been really encouraging to see your support and that things many of you have asked for are already on our nearest and medium-term backlog.

The nearest-term big change you will see is the "collapsing" of the tab bar when vertical tabs are turned on, so that there's no empty space at the top. It's a non-trivial patch (hence it did not make it into the very first Labs appearance), but we're making good progress on it.

I also want to apologize for being MIA until early next week. I'll be back shortly and will respond to every comment.

I use opera only and only because it have that sidebar which lets me have whatsapp and other apps running in sidebar from which i can work and respond if something important. I want to switch to firefox but i dont think it have a sidebar in which we can add social or other websites that open in container except the chatbot in firefox nightly i would be happy to switch if can tell me how to add things in sidebar

Promising stuff! I already have a custom vertical tabs setup that utilises Sidebery and a userChrome.css hack link. That said, I'd love to see, from most to least important:

A way to see tab titles, ideally configurable. I personally don't mind the horizontal space taken by a ~180px wide sidebar that would show the tab titles at all time.
a keyboard shortcut to switch between vertical and horizontal tabs. I 90% of the time use horizontal tabs but when I open _a lot_ of tabs, having them laid out in a vertical list feels easier to manage.
a way to have the window controls move into the address bar. Worst case scenario I'll hack it myself with a userChrome.css stylesheet, assuming the "has vertical tabs" state is easy to detect in CSS 🙂

First I'd like to thank you for this awesome feature, I think most of my feedback are already listed in the other replies (save some space, merge some content ...) however there is two small features that I didn't saw in them:

Double click in the empty space (if available) bellow the tab to open a new one
Be able to right click on the "New tab" button to choose to open a new tab in a Firefox Container, for now there is now way to do it easily.

Basically I'd suggest you to check how the Tab Center Reborn extension is handling those things, it is managing those vertical tabs perfectly to me.

I have two things I'd like to see:

1. When performing a double-click into the sidebar, I'd like to open a new tab. The "+ New Tab" action at the top feels a bit mis-placed.

2. I'd like to resize the sidebar per window. I think I would like it if at some very small width the view would snap into displaying the favicons only. It took me a couple of days to find and understand the "Show sidebar" control next to the search bar.

You're right, I edit my post, added 2 sections with &:has(> #PersonalToolbar[collapsed="false"]) and #PersonalToolbar to fix that. Works with toolbar that only appeared on New Page as well (collapse check). I also reset my button positions and find out that I don't need extra space for button at right, so I removed that too, because Tab Counter addon can be in first row without hacks as used before.

Agree with many of your suggestions. For the second (gap between tabs), I customized it with userChrome.css :

With that, the spacing looks like the one used for the links at the bottom of the sidebar (history, sidebar settings, etc). The height can be adjusted and a little more to mark a difference with the bottom links.

- turn off/on side bar extension

- remove the sidebar settings icon and have it somewhere else in the settings

being able to scroll through sidebar tabs should be pretty high priority, as well as potentially expanding the sidebar after a short hover i.e. vivaldi's implementation

Also, this alternative change will make icons smaller. It a bit hacky because "sidebar-main" have shadow root with ".wrapper" that add this margins and set width for the sidebar and I just couldn't change it's styles, so I move it to the left, cutting left padding.

If merge from code above, then replace an entire last section.

yes, it must be ongoing for the team. I tried the larch build, It has a "strip" button to hide that horizontal new tab. It looks more concise then.

My suggestion is that when I hover over a tab, the tab expands automatically and has a close button. Vertical tabs can only be closed with the middle mouse button at the moment, which is not in my habit

Thanks for this feature! I really like it 😀 But I think it could be better.

Issue:
- List all tabs button can't be moved or removed from the top bar... so I have a big empty bar at the top which is kind of useless for me.

Perhaps the FF team could have just integrated the 'Sidebery' extension into their base code.
It's a well designed and polished implementation that has an abundance of features.
